Another scorcher

It's currently 91 degrees in Corte Madera right now. I was about to eat one of the bananas I had in the kitchen, when I noticed the bag I was storing the bananas in, was wet. It turned out the bananas had rotted and liquefied from the heat. I sighed and tossed the bananas into the trash.

I'm still working through my backlog of e-mails from the past week.

I found a blog post about the amount of code/number of developers working in PHP vs. Ruby.

http://www.feld.com/blog/archives/2006/10/php_vs_ruby.html

It looks like I better brush up on my PHP and Ruby skills then.

Living in a fast paced world

I haven't posted to my LiveJournal in a while. I'm juggling both my job search and working on my PHP programming class which I started on Thursday 5/22/2008.

My last day of work was Friday 5/30/2008. It pretty much consisted of sitting at my desk for three hours then going home. There was a company picnic for that afternoon but I wasn't able to attend, as I spent the rest of the afternoon helping my parents pack up to rest of their belongings before they moved to Cambria the following day at 7 a.m.

I tried out Wii Fit last Sunday (6/1/2008). It's a novel idea, and I felt like I was getting benefit out of the exercises. Being able to exercise in small portions is great for people with low stamina and short attention spans like myself. The balance games are tough. My only gripe is that you can't queue up multiple exercises in a row, so you have to finish one exercise, then go back to the exercise menu to start another one. I've only had time to use Wii Fit four times since then. I should use it more often, but it's been hard to get motivated to use it with the heat wave. I basically spent most of Sunday (6/8/2008) afternoon lying down in bed, with the windows open and my Vornado house circulator cranked to the max, thinking I was going to die from the heat.

I had a job interview for a web application developer position for a firm in Marin County, last week on Thursday (6/5/2008). I have mixed feelings about the job, mainly because I have little to no experience with the technologies they're asking for (ASP.NET, VB.NET, XSLT) and the hiring manager seemed frosty. She also warned me that the job would entail regular overtime, and working on-call, potentially on a three week rotation (meaning I'd be on call one out of every three weeks). It sounded like this was more of a "tech support" job rather than a development job. I voiced my concerns to the recruiter from the recruitment firm, and he insisted that this is a wonderful opportunity and that the people he's sent over there absolutely adored working there. Of course he only gets paid if I take the job, so he doesn't necessarily have my best interests in mind. :P

Last week was kinda unproductive. I did some reading on ASP.NET, but mostly I ended up playing Wii games. I still need to drive to Goodwill to get rid of these darned speaker stands, and go to the Computer Recycling center to drop off the portable TV and Direct TV box. I also need to go to the hardware store to get backup copies of my keys made, and I need to go to Safeway AGAIN to get more supplies for the apartment, and go back to my parents house to trim the juniper hedges around the house (I've been appointed gardener for the new renters). I also have to work on my PHP programming class lest I fall behind on that.

Speaking of falling behind, I've fallen behind on my gameplaying.

Games I've purchased recently, but haven't finished:
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Metroid Prime Corruption
Super Mario Galaxy (working on the last level)
Zelda Twilight Princess

Games I haven't played much:
Guitar Hero 3
Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party
Need for Speed Carbon
Final Fantasy Crisis Core for PSP
Final Fantasy Tactics for PSP
Final Fantasy VII: Revenant Wings for Nintendo DS
Dawn of War Soulstorm (it just felt totally unfun compared to the other Dawn of War games)

Never finished:
New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS
Zelda Phantom Hourglass for Nintendo DS
